IAA Training – Who and What?

 

SPAULDING FOR CHILDREN

  • Spaulding, who is heading our project, is one of four organizations funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to develop a training curriculum on counseling adoption as an option.
  • The training targets health care professionals providing health services to pregnant women and teens in public or private, non-profit health centers.
  • The training is designed to increase the health care person’s knowledge and skill in counseling adoption as an option on an equal basis with other options of pregnancy termination or parenting.

IAA Training – Curriculum

 

ADOPTION AS AN OPTION

  • "Adoption As An Option" is the name of the curriculum.
  • The curriculum was developed in accordance with DHHS issued guidelines and was approved by DHHS.
  • The training targets health care professionals providing health services to pregnant women and teens in public or private, non-profit health centers.
  • The training is designed to increase the health care person’s knowledge and skill in counseling adoption as an option on an equal basis with other options of pregnancy termination or parenting.

IAA Training – Module One

 

ADOPTION OPTIONS

  • Provides an overview of Title X regulations with respect to pregnancy counseling situations.
  • Provides historical and current information on adoption from the members of the adoption triad (birthparents, child, and adoptive parents), adoption providers, pregnancy counselors, and health care providers.
  • Provides a discussion of personal values in the context of professional responsibilities.
  • Provides New Mexico adoption laws with special attention to the rights of both birthparents.

IAA Training – Module Two

 

ASSESSING & COUNSELING PREGNANT WOMEN & TEENS

  • Provides discussion of the meaning of the concept, “informed consent” in working with a woman/teen with an unplanned pregnancy.
  • Provides information on and skill development in assessing and counseling pregnant teens using nondirective, noncoercive counseling techniques.
  • Provides discussion of special issues in working with teens, e.g. parental consent for health care services, referral to children’s protective services, parental consent for adoption planning.
  • Provides birth father’s rights related to involvement in the pregnancy and the birthmother’s adoption planning.

  • Presenting information & options through open ended questions designed to help the patient make an informed decision that satisfies their own needs.
  • Helping professional supports the decisions made, including the right to refuse information even if they don’t agree with the decisions.

  • Who will be helping you through this?
  • There are 3 options to a pregnancy:
    (1) carry the baby and parent the child
    (2) carry the baby and place him/her for adoption
    (3) terminate the pregnancy

RESOURCES AND COMMUNITY REFERRALS FOR
PREGNANCY COUNSELING AND ADOPTION

  • Provides discussion of adoption referral options and networking skills.
  • Provides an opportunity for participants to network with various representatives from the adoption/pregnancy counseling community.
  • Provides an opportunity to practice assessment and referral skills utilizing case vignettes.

IAA Training – Implementation & Eligibility

 

TRAINING IMPLEMENTATION

  • Available to groups of 6 or more on dates and at locations convenient to the participants.
  • Free of charge to eligible health care professionals. All costs, including mileage and meals, are paid by the grant.
  • Approved for 6.6 CEAP contact hours for nurses.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

Nurses, Social Workers, Technicians, and Physicians,
who are employed by
:
  • Public Health Departments
  • Public Hospitals
  • Nonprofit clinics, e.g. Planned Parenthood, Teen Health Centers, and School-Based Clinics
  • Any Health Care Professional interacting with pregnant women
