Deaf Group Home
David Sorensen, LPCC
The Deaf Group Home (DGH) continues to shine and provide unique services for our Deaf adolescents. We had six students by the years end representing the states of New Mexico, Virginia and Texas. We served four boys and two girls from various cultural and ethic backgrounds. The services and programs at the Deaf Group Home are well known throughout the United States.

Our students continue to attend various schools in Albuquerque and Santa Fe. We had one student traveled to the New Mexico School for the Deaf daily. There were four students attending Del Norte High School and one student in the ACCESS program (transition from school to work/independence) through the Albuquerque Public Schools.

The students at the DGH had a very active year. Some of the activities
included UNM football and basketball games; attended NM School for the Deaf ballgames; the students attended play and comedy night at the NM School for the Deaf; traveled the new Rail Runner on a number of occasions; went hiking; exercising at the community centers; went swimming; visited the public library on a regular basis; and for the first time the DGH students went on a two night camping trip to Carlsbad Caverns.

Pregnancy Counseling &
Adoption Services

Megan Walsh, LISW
Domestic Adoption La Familia provides compassionate, unbiased options based counseling for pregnant women and their partners. During the last year, we served 23 women, their partners and families in the Pregnancy Counseling program. Our caring, experienced staff explored all available resources and choices with each client. 14 women chose to make an adoption plan. They were able to select, meet and develop a relationship with their child’s adoptive family. Several birthparents took part in individualized birthing classes taught by a volunteer licensed Nurse Practioner/Midwife. Unlimited adoption related counseling was provided prior to the child’s birth and after placement. 39 families completed preparations to adopt in the last year. Adoptive families were provided with homestudies, pre and post placement support, education & resources. A staff member is on call 24 hours a day to provide support during crisis situations.

International Adoption La Familia provided training, homestudies and postplacement services for 22 families adopting internationally. As a Supervised Provider of local adoption services for internationally adopting families we work diligently to align ourselves with well respected, ethical international agencies with programs in Thailand, Korea, China, Guatemala, Ethiopia, India, Ukraine, Mongolia and Khazakhstan. We offer training on a monthly basis at night and on the weekends for families.

Adopt US Kids We are in our fifth year of funding as a Rapid Response Team (RRT) for the nationwide AdoptUsKids project. Our funding comes from the federal government through a grant with the Rocky Mountain Adoption Exchange. La Familia is required to respond within 72hours to all inquiries from New Mexico families in response to the “You don’t have to be perfect to be a perfect parent” marketing campaigns in both Spanish and English. We follow up with families and provide support and guidance until the family is involved with
