David A. Sorensen is La Familia's Deaf
Group Home Director.
David has a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology/Sociology from Northern Arizona University, a Master’s degree in Counseling from the University of Arizona and an Ed.D in Administration and Leadership from Northern Arizona University. He has worked as a counselor/therapist for the Deaf for over 22 years and spent 13 years at the Arizona State School for the Deaf in Tucson, Arizona, 1 year as the State Coordinator for the Deaf in Nevada, 3 years as Program Director at Desert Hills of New Mexico and has served as President of Southwest Services for the Deaf for 6 years in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
David’s article “Facilitating Positive Behaviors in School Aged Children was published (ADARA, Winter). He established the first Charter School for the Deaf west of Minnesota and assisted in establishing the Deaf Program at Desert Hills of New Mexico and the Deaf Group Home through La Familia, Inc. He is also a national speaker on Deaf Mental Health. David is a member of the American Counseling Association and ADARA (a membership providing educational, mental health and rehabilitation services for the Deaf population). David’s focus is on keeping his finger on the pulse of Deaf services within New Mexico and the Southwest. His goal is to provide the gold standard to Deaf families. Mr. Sorenson enjoys his work with La Familia because La Familia provides families with quality service to our Deaf adolescents and La Familia takes risks to provide such services.
